とっておき情報
今から約400年前の戦国時代末期に建てられ、その後天守閣が焼失や再建されずに残っています。そのため、日本最古の城として、国宝に指定されていて、日本の城の人気ランキングでは姫路城・熊本城と共に、上位になることが多いです。
アルプスの雪や桜の白い色と似合う漆塗りの壁の黒い城で、岡山城と共に、「烏城」という愛称で呼ばれます。入館料を払い、狭くて急な木の階段を息を切らして最上階の6階まで登ると、天気の良い日はアルプスの山々が一望できます。
一度に入城できる人数が限られるので、GWやお盆休みなどピークの時は1～2時間の待ち時間となり、最近は入城整理券が配られます。比較的空いている朝か夕方に行くのがお勧めです。
2021年まで松本市立博物館（日本民俗資料館）が併設されていて、江戸時代などの歴史的資料の他、松本手まり・押絵雛・七夕人形など松本の民俗資料も見られましたが、2023年に別の場所に移設オープンされます。

Matsumoto Castle
One of my favourite shots from my trip. And Matsumoto was one of my favourite spots in general. A quaint, chill (in attitude as well as in temperature) mountain town with lovely little streets and great food (sanzoku-yaki was definitely a favourite). The castle is one of only a handful black ones in the country and is also one of only a handful that had never needed rebuilding. I asked my guide from matsumotoexperience why it was black. To my surprise it wasn`t for aesthetic or tactical reasons but for financial ones. White plaster was expensive and Matsumoto was poor, so they built everything out of wood and painted it with black lacquer. At night, the castle is stunning as well—this photo however is edited pretty heavily. In reality, the castle was lit up in a fairly ugly green color, so I made it monochrome.
